Handling of infected material in HIV

HANDLING OF HIV INFECTED MATERIAL
  • Gloves must be worn while handling infected materials like blood and body fluids
  • Masks and eye protection should be used in cases where splashing may occur
  • Sharp instruments and needles should be disposed in puncture resistant containers  
  • HIV contaminated products can be disinfected by chemical germicides like
    • Sodium hypochlorite(1-10%)
    • Formaldehyde (5%)
    • Ethanol (20%)
    • Glutaraldehyde (2%)
  • If the needle stick accident occurs, antiretroviral therapy should be given within 24 to 48 hours
