NEOPLASMS IN AIDS
  • Patients have high incidence of tumors which are caused by oncogenic DNA virus
Tumors which occur in HIV patients are
  • Kaposi sarcoma –Human  herpes virus 8
  • Non-hodgkins lymphoma – Epstein Bar Virus
  • Cervical cancer in women – Human papilloma virus
  • Anal cancer in men – Human papilloma virus
Kaposi sarcoma
  • Human Herpes virus 8 is responsible for Kaposi sarcoma
  • Characterized by the proliferation of spindle shaped cells that express markers of both endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells
  • Lytic replication in the cell leads to release of growth factors like VEGF which leads to replication
  • Kaposi sarcoma occurring in HIV patients is different from sporadic form that it produces widespread lesions
Lymphomas
3 groups of lymphomas occur in HIV patients
  • Systemic Non-Hodgkins lymphoma
  • CNS primary lymphoma
  • Body cavity based lymphoma
