Pathways of spread of tumor 2m

PATHWAYS OF SPREAD

Dissemination of tumor  occurs through the following pathways

1. Lymphatic spread – common pathway for the spread of epithelial malignancy eg. breast carcinoma, colonic carcinoma

2. Hematogenous spread – common pathway for the spread of mesenchymal malignancy eg. Leiomyosarcoma, fibrosarcoma

3. Transcoelomic spread – spread through peritoneal, pericardial, pleural and subarachnoid space. Eg. Ovarian carcinoma, Mucinous Appendiceal tumors, and Gastric carcinomas

4. Perineural spread – Spread along the nerve trunk. Eg. prostatic carcinoma, Gall bladder carcinoma
