FLORID SQUAMOUS METAPLASIA
  • Squamous metaplasia of cervix is defined as replacement of endocervical columnar epithelium to squamous epithelium at the transformation zone 
  • Florid squamous metaplasia can be misinterpreted as squamous cell carcinoma
  • Characteristic features suggesting squamous metaplasia are
    • Smooth bordered squamous cell nest
    • bland nuclei
    • No stromal response
    • Presence of residual mucinous epithelial cells
    • presence of gland lumina
    • Absence of dysplastic change in adjacent epithelium
    • Superficial location of lesion
